Where is Puerto Banús?

Puerto Banús is in Southern Spain, Malaga, and is part of the Marbella municipality on the Costa del Sol. Situated to the southwest of Marbella, mid-way between Marbella town and San Pedro de Alcántara. It is on the sea, and you can walk from either Marbella or San Pedro via the Paseo Marítimo boardwalk.

From Málaga airport, it’s about forty minutes, and transport options include car rental, taxi, or bus. It is reached via the motorway A-7 with the opportunity to take either the toll A-7 or the coast road the N.340.

Puerto Banús History

The marina was built in 1970 by José Banús, a local property developer and friend of Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe of the Marbella club. Initially, the plans were to make skyscraper blocks. However, Jose Banús wanted to create a luxurious paradise for millionaires and celebrities worldwide.

At the time, Marbella was one of the favourite destinations of the International jet set, with the world’s most famous stars holidaying in Marbella. The inauguration guests included the Aga Khan, and Prince Ranier Princess Grace of Monaco, with Julio Iglesias singing for 1,700 guests.

It was developed with Mediterranean architecture, a sophisticated Andalusian village, and a marina. Puerto Banús has shopping malls, restaurants and bars built around the marina.

José Banús became one of the most important developers of residential tourism complexes on the Costa del Sol. The port took his name, and it soon grew beyond the two streets and the original harbour. These days it has several tree-lined streets with a central ‘plaza’ or town square named after Malaga-born Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas.
