The Ultimate Area Guide to Puerto Banús Property

Puerto Banús is a glamorous marina filled with upmarket bars, restaurants, and a high concentration of superyachts and luxury cars in Marbella. As one of the top resort destinations in Europe, properties in Puerto Banús are highly sought after in Marbella and Costa del Sol.

Where Is Puerto Banús?

Puerto Banús sits at the most western point of the Marbella Golden Mile and is part of the Marbella municipality on the Costa del Sol of Málaga in the south of Spain.

Situated midway between Marbella town and San Pedro de Alcántara to its west, it has been the main centre of social activity in the town since its inauguration in May 1970. It is on the sea, and you can walk from either Marbella or San Pedro via the Paseo Marítimo boardwalk.

Puerto Banús is about forty minutes from Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, and transport options include car rental, taxi, or bus. It is reached via the motorway A-7 with the opportunity to take either the toll AP-7 or the coast road the N-340.

Puerto Banús History

The marina was built in 1970 by José Banús, a local property developer and friend of Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe of the Marbella Club. Initially, the plans were to make skyscraper blocks. However, José Banús wanted to create a luxurious paradise for millionaires and celebrities worldwide.

At the time, Marbella was one of the favourite destinations of the international jet set, with the world’s most famous stars holidaying in Marbella. The inauguration guests included the Aga Khan and Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, with Julio Iglesias singing for 1,700 guests.

Built to mirror a typical Andalusian village in architectural style, Puerto Banús has become a “village” with a difference: with its fabulous marina full of private yachts and luxury international brand boutiques, classy restaurants and eateries, nightclubs and bars, department stores and commercial centres, cinemas, lovely beaches and beach clubs, and exclusive residential complexes.

José Banús became one of the most important developers of residential tourism complexes on the Costa del Sol. The port took his name, and it soon grew beyond the two streets and the original harbour. These days it has several tree-lined streets with a central plaza or town square named after Málaga-born Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas.

Why Puerto Banús Is Special

Puerto Banús has something for everyone; from luxury shopping malls to exclusive casinos and nightclubs, there’s no shortage of things to do here. Its beautiful beaches are perfect for sunbathing or swimming in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Many say that Puerto Banús offers the best of both worlds: a fabulous social scene just walking distance from beautiful residential urbanisations which are like a true oasis offering calmer surroundings within magnificent private tropical gardens with pools, gymnasiums, spas and many additional facilities for their residents and guests.

Plus, if you’re looking for a great place to eat out or socialise with friends, you’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars around the marina area. It signifies wall-to-wall glamour, from the designer boutique-lined streets to the superyachts berthed in the harbour.

It has become one of the most important attractions on the Costa del Sol, estimated to have up to five million annual visitors, and is popular with international celebrities.
